Frequently Asked Questions
1) What age patients do you treat?
We treat adult patients ages 18+.
2) Where are you located?
Our office is located in Michigan. However, our appointments are held via convenient online video sessions (telehealth). If you are interested in an in-person appointment, please contact hello@trueyoupsych.com.
3) In which states do you see patients?
Complete care can be provided for those in Michigan, New York, Florida, California, Virginia, Georgia, Arizona.
4) Do you accept health insurance?
In order to provide the highest level of holistic care to our patients, we do not take insurance which means patients pay fees out-of-pocket. This allows the flexibility needed to treat our patients with the care they deserve.
For those in Michigan, New York, Florida, California, Virginia, Georgia, Arizona, you may be able to get up to 90% of the fee reimbursed by your insurance if your policy includes coverage for “out of network” providers. Please check with your insurance carrier.
5) What if I am currently abusing the medication I want to taper?
We are unable to treat substance use disorders. If you are actively or recently abusing the medication you are on, please seek an addiction specialist.
6) What approach do you use to help people taper?
I provide hyperbolic, patient-led tapers.
I use a slow rate (reducing every 3-12 weeks) & small medication reductions (2.5% - 10% at a time is common but varies for each person).
I do not use rigid schedules but adjust based on what your body tolerates.
I do not use medication bridges.
I appreciate the Ashton Manual (but do not follow it exactly).
I give holistic lifestyle recommendations that ease withdrawal.
I provide ongoing mental & emotional support before, during, & after your taper.
7) What diagnoses do you work with?
I commonly work with people who have been given diagnoses of anxiety, panic disorder, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and various personality disorders. When it comes to schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders, while reductions of medications may be possible, new data shows only 10% of people can taper off completely without relapsing. See this study: https://joannamoncrieff.com/2023/10/02/lessons-from-the-radar-trial/. We recommend those who have psychotic disorders to work closely with a psychiatrist in-person.
8) Can I make an appointment for my adult child?
While we receive calls from parents who like our approach and want their adult child to engage in it, we have found this circumstance doesn’t work well. An important milestone for a person deciding to taper is that he/she feels motivated to engage in holistic lifestyle changes and is able to be responsible for their healing process.
